Kia Ora and Welcome to Waimangu Volcanic Valley

The Waimangu Volcanic Valley was created following the eruption of Mt. Tarawera in 1886. Although the eruption destroyed the world famous Pink and White Terraces on the shores of Lake Rotomahana; a new geothermal paradise was created, the Waimangu Volcanic Rift Valley - the World's Youngest Geothermal System in New Zealand.

When you visit Waimangu, there is a choice of easy self guided nature walks through the geothermal features. If you are looking for a more relaxed way to view the geothermal features take a boat cruise on beautiful Lake Rotomahana which has its own geothermal system or to see all the features, take the combination of a walking tour and a boat cruise.

The Waimangu Volcanic Valley is also home to spectacular plant and bird life. Lake Rotomahana is the youngest naturally formed lake in NZ and the deepest in the North Island.
We also have a selection of all inclusive guided tours which depart daily from Rotorua. Please note, we do require advanced bookings to be made for these tours.

The Waimangu Volcanic Valley has been the recipient of numerous tourism awards and is consistently rated as the No. 1 geothermal attraction in Rotorua. The most recent award is a "Certificate of Excellence 2014 Winner" from tripadvisor
