An area steeped in Gold Mining history, Central Otago is a landscape of fast flowing rivers, mountains and dry pasture due to the searing summer temperatures. It is often the hottest area in summer and the coldest in winter.
Old gold mining towns are still in existence today and relics from bygone days are evident. Alexandra, Clyde, Roxburgh and Cromwell are some of the towns in this region.
Today the harvesting of stone fruit is a major industry in the area along with being associated with being the home of Pinot Noir in New Zealand.
