West Coast

One of New Zealand's most remote and rugged areas the West Coast of the South Island is a narrow strip of land between the Southern Alps and theTasman Sea.

It is largely a wilderness of rivers, forest and glaciers. Sparsely populated, the biggest town is Greymouth and is also home to smaller towns such as Hokitika, Haast and Westport.

Scenery in the area is spectacular with mountains in your view at just about every turn, glaciers formed over 1,000s of years and the wild ocean.

Attractions in this area are vast. A visit to Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers are a must. Scenic flights are available to enable you to view the glaciers from a height. The Old Ghost Road is a remote and challenging bike ride but with unforgettable scenery on the way. For a more sedate day out a boat trip on Lake Brunner is a relaxing way to spend the day.

Accommodation is available to suit all ages and budgets and the local cuisine is top class. If you are in Hokitika when their Wild Food Festival is on you can sample food not usually tried every day.

Enjoy this mystic area of New Zealand. It will be an experience that you wont forget.
